Skype Application Sharing Magically Works

I have attempted to run the application sharing in Skype provided by the extra “Unyte” and it didn’t work. From what I read in forums, I had to pay to get it working . This morning I just thought of trying it again and it worked. I don’t know why it magically just started working as I didn’t change anything that I think would affect the Skype or the extra Unyte, but I am glad. So now I can start experiencing and testing the application sharing.  One guess I have is that it may work because its weekend, well I would find out Monday if it would still work.

I expect that the implementation method used here is screen updates. In this investigation, I want to see:

  • the session protocol used and the data protocol used
  • I would also like to see the bandwidth consumption and how the application would respond in unstable network, lose of packets and lose of connection for a few seconds
  • will also try with different platform, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP

Will be using wireshark to investigate and communication would be between my host operating system and virtual operating system copies running on the VMWare Server 1. I am especially want to see how it would handle synchronising update where network connection is unstable.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: In the later versions of Skype, desktop sharing is integrated into the Skype application itself. There is no need for a third-party tool or extra. At the time of writing this note, it is however only available in Windows and maybe Apple Mac of versions Skype and not for Linux.
